History of the All Souls Chapel

The first written evidence of the design of the Chapel is found in the Anglican Cemetery Minutes book in 1949.  The minutes make reference to a letter from R. Lindsay Little Architect dated 26th February, 1952, in connection with the proposed Sinclair Memorial Chapel. From this entry in the minutes we can assume that Andrew Sinclair had already approached the Anglican Trust with regard to the erection of a memorial chapel and that R L Little was the original Architect, even though later entries in the minute book refer to FHB Wilton as the Architect.

From inspection of the subject building and other works by R L Little we have concluded that the final elevations and details are by R L Little.  The basic floor plan layout and domed roof idea may have been by F Wilton but apart from an apartment block in Potts Point no other works by Wilton have been found despite exhaustive researching.

The entry indicates that Andrew Sinclair had let a contract for the erection of the Chapel.  The contract provided only for the erection of the exterior of the Chapel and did not include the interior.  The entry also indicates that the Archbishop of Sydney has given his approval to the plans for the Chapel and that land had been set aside for the erection of a chapel within the Anglican section of Rookwood Cemetery. The land was located at the end of the existing Railway line.

The Secretary of the Trust sighted a copy of Andrew Sinclair’s will, which has provisions for the completion of the interior of the Chapel and further provisions for the upkeep and maintenance of the Chapel. The laying of the Foundation stone was conducted by Archdeacon J Bidwell.  Archdeacon Wade thanked Mr & Mrs Sinclair for their gift.

Mr. Andrew Sinclair died 23rd December, 1960 and Mrs. Annie Eliza Sinclair died in 1964.
