Maintenance of a Memorial

Our memorials are made from a selected range of quality granites which will require little maintenance for decades to come. Granite is a natural stone and if processed properly will not lose its shine, colour or appearance, even though it may be exposed to all sorts of adverse weather conditions.

All that families need to do is periodically wash down the monument with a bucket of clean water and car wash liquid, then chamois dry. Families that would like to spend more time detailing their loved ones memorial can apply bee’s wax or buff with a furniture polish. This will help repel dirt and will give a beading effect when wet similar to a newly polished motor vehicle.

Memorials which start to loose their shine or gloss will probably be due to the granite not being polished properly when it was cut. To overcome or disguise this problem some companies may resort to oiling the granite. Granite does not need to be oiled if polished properly as this will only attract dirt when windy.

Inscription / Lettering

Once lettering is cut into the granite it will be there forever in its natural state. Inscriptions are normally gilded in 23cwt gold leaf or painted to make the letters stand out. They can also be left natural on black / dark colour granites as the contrast is sufficient to allow the inscription to be easily read. The only negative of natural lettering is the inscription becomes difficult to read when wet.

When natural lettering is enhanced with paint or gold the finish has a limited life similar to paint when applied externally to a house. The gold finish generally lasts longer than paint but understandably will cost more. If the finish starts to come out it can be regilded with gold or painted again because the inscription is permanently inscribed into the stone.

The lettering finish will wear off quicker if continually scrubbed and rubbed so the inscription area should only be wiped gently with a damp soft cloth as required. When cleaning avoiding touching the gold or paint.

The Importance of Memorials

Memorials pay respect to the departed but they really are for the living.

They contribute positively to the grieving process, provide a sense of place and leave a tangible permanent record of a life lived, for the family and future generations to read.  The history of past lives is best recorded on the headstones and memorials.
