What was the recent NSW Government announcement affecting Crown land cemetery sites across Sydney and Newcastle?

On 23 June 2023, NSW Lands and Property Minister, Stephen Kamper, formally announced Metropolitan Memorial Parks as the name of the new entity that will amalgamate the operations of Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Land Manager (Southern Metropolitan) and Northern Metropolitan Cemeteries Land Manager (Northern Metropolitan) to Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Land Manager (Rookwood General). This amalgamation is effective from 1 July 2023 and all former Land Managers will no longer exist.

Why is the amalgamation happening?

The move ends two years of uncertainty for the organisation and our stakeholders. Operating as one entity will make us stronger and more efficient, and better able to work with Government to find solutions to Sydney’s future supply of cemetery space.

Why was the name chosen?

Metropolitan Memorial Parks reflects the important and caring service provided to the community.

The organisation’s eight memorial sites across Sydney and Newcastle are united in their stewardship to provide places of remembrance and reflection; supporting people to grieve, celebrate life, and remember loved ones. The parks are also tranquil open spaces, used and valued by surrounding communities from all faiths and cultures.

How will the amalgamation affect our operations?

It’s business as usual. Whilst the transition is underway, our teams will be working hard to make sure day-to-day operations continue as normal and the changeover period runs as smoothly as possible.

Stakeholders, families, and visitors can expect the same quality care, service, and delivery across all memorial parks and sites.

We will continue to provide stakeholder progress updates as we further consolidate systems, processes, new branding, and websites.

Will all systems, documents and branding be updated across the cemeteries?

Now that we have legally amalgamated, over the coming months we will be consolidating our systems, processes, branding and websites.  

In the meantime, please continue to engage with your existing contacts at each cemetery or memorial park.

Supplier Frequently Asked Questions

What does the amalgamation mean for customers and suppliers that work with Rookwood General Cemetery (RGC)?

All existing legal obligations will remain unchanged, with RGC being renamed Metropolitan Memorial Parks. The ABN of 65 959 157 751 will remain the same.

What does the amalgamation mean for customers that engage Northern Metropolitan Cemeteries (NMC) or Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries (SMC) to provide goods and/or services to them?

All existing legal obligations with SMC and NMC will transfer to RGC, which will be renamed to Metropolitan Memorial Parks Land Manager ABN 65 959 157 751 by virtue of Schedule 6 of the Crown Land Management Act 2016 (NSW).

Metropolitan Memorial Parks will continue to meet all of SMC and NMC’s existing supply and service obligations and any other legal obligations such as licenses, leases and guarantees as required. There will be no changes to these terms and conditions.

What does the amalgamation mean for suppliers or contractors that previously supplied goods or services to Northern Metropolitan Cemeteries (NMC) or Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries?

All current and previous contracts or supply arrangements with NMC or SMC will transfer to RGC, which will be renamed Metropolitan Memorial Parks Land Manager ABN 65 959 157 751 by virtue of Schedule 6 of the Crown Land Management Act 2016 (NSW).

There will be no changes to the terms and conditions of these arrangements/contracts.

Are bank account details changing?

No. Bank account and payment details will remain the same across each of the former Land Managers, the only change will be the legal entity name and ABN which will be Metropolitan Memorial Parks Land Manager ABN 65 959 157 751.

Will there be any changes to the payment terms and invoicing processes?

All payment processes remain the same across each of the former Land Managers, however all invoices will need to be made out as follows:

Which ABN should suppliers and contractors use?

Metropolitan Memorial Parks Land Manager’s ABN is 65 959 157 751.

How will the amalgamation impact supplier diversity? E.g., will Metropolitan Memorial Parks continue to work with a supplier if there is a similar supplier utilised at one of the merging organisations.

At this stage all current and previous contracts or supply arrangement will remain unchanged.

Will prices be streamlined across the cemeteries?

Will my point of contact change?

No. Please continue to engage with your current point of contact at each cemetery.

Will correspondence and goods need to be delivered to an alternate location?

No. Please continue to send correspondence to your current point of contact at each cemetery, and/or send goods to the location requested by your current contact.
